The digital divide refers to the gap between people with effective access to digital and information technology and those with very limited or no access at all ("Digital Divide", 2011, para. 1). The digital divide has been equated to the civil rights movement of the 21st century. According to Calvin (2000), “In the most basic sense, the digital divide is the ever growing gap between those people and communities who have access to information technology and those who do not.”
The digital divide is more than just an access problem.
What Can I Do?
So, what can we do about it? Our school has great computers and all kinds of cutting-edge technology, so why should we worry about people who don't have access? It is the opinion of the technology committee that lack of access to technology and all the information that technology can bring should be everyone's problem. So we invite our school community to participate in a very worthwhile program. Bridge the Digital Divide is a UK-based organization that collects, refurbishes, and distributes used computers around the world.
